SEND Approach to Learning

Inclusive working styles

To effectively cater to any supplementary requirements that may impede a child's attainment of their utmost educational capabilities. We facilitate a preliminary video/telephone consultation with parents/carers. This interaction will serve to acquire comprehensive insights into the specific additional needs in question. Consequently, the delivery of lessons can be adjusted to incorporate learning styles that enhance the student's comfort level or render the lessons more easily comprehensible.

Tutor Adaptability

During our initial encounter, the opportunity is seized for the tutor to acquaint themself with the student, gaining insight into their learning preferences, as well as their personal preferences. This valuable information will be utilised when planning the lessons in a manner that fosters an enjoyable and captivating learning experience. The online nature of these lessons bestows adaptability, affording the student a sense of ease within the familiar confines of their own home, replete with the comforts and resources that may prove advantageous to their educational journey.

Personalised Learning

Upon completing successful initial consultations with the parent and child, the tutor is able to discern the specific learning style of the pupil. Armed with this valuable insight, Olive & Ivy Education diligently customises lessons to cater to the unique requirements of every individual, ensuring that the material can be grasped effortlessly.

The tutor strives to facilitate a learning environment that is both accommodating and adaptable, enabling the student to follow the lessons at a pace comfortable to them and in a manner that aligns seamlessly with their personal preferences and educational necessities.

ASD

Developmental impairment known as Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is caused by variations in the brain.
People with ASD frequently struggle with restricted or repetitive behaviours, as well as social communication and interactional difficulties.
Additionally, people with ASD may learn in different ways.
Sessions with Olive & Ivy Education can be adapted to suit students who have ASD. Autism should not be seen as a barrier to learning but an altered way of learning.

ADHD

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, is very distinct from ASD. ADHD shares similar characteristics with autism.
People with ADHD may appear agitated, struggle to focus, and act impulsively.
Students who struggle to focus can benefit from shorter classes and frequent breaks. The inability to focus for extended amounts of time does not have to be a barrier to learning. Receiving quick key recaps and knowledge-boosting sessions can have tremendous benefits.

Dyslexia

Dyslexia is a widespread cognitive disability that primarily affects reading, writing, and spelling.
Intelligence is typically unaffected, unlike a learning impairment.
Up to one in ten individuals in the UK are thought to have dyslexia.

Although dyslexia is a chronic condition that can cause difficulties on a daily basis, there is support available to help those who struggle allowing them to succeed in both education and the workplace.

Global Development Delay

The phrase "Global Development delay" is used when a child takes longer than others their age to achieve developmental milestones. Global Development Delay does not have to be seen as a negative impact on education. Alternative ways of learning, can enhance opportunities to develop cognitively, socially and emotionally. Olive & Ivy Education offers support with Global Development delay and promotes adjusted learning so that students can reach their fullest potential.

Dyscalculia

Like Dyslexia, developmental Dyscalculia belongs to a family of distinct cognitive disabilities. Learning disorders  like dyscalculia frequently co-occur with one or more other conditions, such as Dyslexia, Dyspraxia, ADHD or ADD.
Olive & Ivy Education takes pride in working with students who struggle with dyspraxia; by concentrating on all aspects of your chosen subject, providing crucial skills to help a student when they are experiencing difficulties. We install the belief that obstacles presented can be removed or surmounted.

ADD

Symptoms of inattention, distractibility and impaired working memory are often referred to as ADD symptoms, which falls under the Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder diagnosis. Similar to ADHD, students who have difficulty focusing their attention for long periods of time, may benefit from relaxed lesson plans. Learning is still highly accessible and extra tuition can be the key to finding appropriate balance for the pupil when it comes to receiving educational information.

Dyspraxia

Developmental co-ordination disorder (DCD), also known as dyspraxia, is a neurological condition that affects an individual's physical co-ordination. This condition is a discernible impairment in the execution of age-appropriate tasks. Dyspraxia has a significant impact on motor coordination, visual perception, spatial awareness, short-term memory, as well as the organisation of both tasks and thoughts. Consequently, it can present challenges in organising one's studies, prioritising tasks, and formulating academic work.

SLCN

Speech, language, and communication needs (SLCN) is a term that describes difficulties in producing sounds accurately, stammering, and encountering voice problems such as hoarseness and loss of voice. These challenges can significantly impact a person's ability to communicate effectively. Children who commence their schooling with SLCN may encounter difficulties potentially leading to withdrawal or the manifestation of challenging behavior within the school setting. We can help by altering education to allow for the pupils capabilities.

Sensory Impairments

A sensory impairment affects hearing, vision or both.

Types of sensory impairments can include:

Visual Impairment, Hearing Impairment, Deafness, Multi-Sensory Impaired (MSI)and Deafblind.

Olive & Ivy Education encourages the use of visual aids to support education. We assess the student's background knowledge in each subject before progressing with tuition and we become aware of gaps in a pupils knowledge that could be affecting their learning. Having education at home can help to avoid ambient noises and noise distractions.

Mental Health

Children who have difficulties with their mental health can be subject to becoming irritable, display emotional outbursts, give in to aggressive behaviours or boredom all of which can lead to the disruption of learning. Children exhibiting these difficulties and mental health issues are often "punished" with detentions or suspensions to reduce the risk of disrupting other students. However, with 1:1 tuition, there are no detentions or disruptions to others. The tutor will work with the pupil to ensure they are in a comfortable safe environment, with the most support possible whilst learning.

Physical Impairments

Physical disability can significantly affect an individual's ability to engage in activities. This encompasses a range of challenges, include movement, posture (such as sitting or standing), object manipulation, communication, perception, reflexes, and automatic motor skills. The primary obstacles faced by students with physical disabilities is the initial difficulty of physically accessing the learning environment. The inaccessibility of buildings poses a significant challenge for many of these students. Online Tuition does not have building limitations and can be accessed in an environment comfortable for the student.

Medical Conditions

Long-term absences caused by health issues can impact education. It is important to note that traditional schooling is confined to specific term periods and restricted hours.

Home education offers flexibility of accessible year-round learning, accessible at a time that suits the studen. In order to ensure that education is obtained in a relaxed and healthy way, tuition sessions can be arranged to accommodate medical conditions or appointments. Effects on learning caused by diminished concentration, memory, and other cognitive abilities are often caused during periods of illness.
